Education Minister Shaik Baksh today says the National Schools Feeding Programme that was launched in January has shown progress throughout the country, notwithstanding some unfair distributions that were quickly addressed by the Ministry.

The Ministry of Education rolled out an $800M National School Feeding Programme that is expected to benefit over 51,000 nursery and primary students in coastal and riverain communities.

The aim of the programme was to have more children attending school even those who were unable because of certain basic needs.

Local Government Minister Chandresh Sharma has made an about turn over his decision to suspend construction at the San Juan market. Two weeks ago Sharma expressed concern that the $52 million market was not "value for money". However today in a meeting with stakeholders over the proposed market, Sharma instructed the contractor to begin work on Monday. The contractor, Rohan Saisbhan expects construction to be completed in one years’ time.

There are calls this evening for the mentally insane to be removed from the city streets and be placed into a holding facility where they can be treated. Citizens on Wednesday reacted strongly to the brutal cutlass attack by a mentally challenged man which left two dead and two others injured. According to a prominent Guyanese psychologist, people with mental problems often assume a double personality, it’s almost like they become unaware of whatever is going on around them, even if they themselves are committing an act.

Embattled Tv Talk show host Cn Sharma was forced to leave Canada while under medical observation at a private institution. He is on his way back to Guyana to meet the November 10 court date. His sudden move is as a result of statements made by President Bharrat Jagdeo suggesting that he is deliberately staying away from prosecution. Jagdeo said that from what he has gathered, the Police have a full proof case against Chandra Narine Sharma and that the Director of Public Prosecution should pursue a course of action to have him returned to the country to face prosecution.
