Tourism Minister Dr Rupert Griffith says the recently increased  Air Passenger Duty (APD) in the United Kingdom is crippling the Caribbean’s already battered tourism industry.
In an attempt to boost revenue the UK increased the APD by 55 per cent. This has increased the cost of plane tickets for persons travelling to the Caribbean fro the UK by as much as £150.
Griffith said he has approached the UK Government to "rescind" the tax.
 

George Stanley Baird has been appointed as the chairman of the Tourism Development Company.
Baird and the other eight members of the  TDC board received their letters of appointment form Tourism Minister Dr Rupert Griffith today.
Baird, said the time for making tourism a viable revenue earner for the country is now and for all the "old talk" to come to an end.
 

Chateau Margot, East Coast Demerara –  Relatives are reeling in sorrow following the loss of  their dear one Dennis Ramah, who was cut down by armed criminals that invaded his business place in broad daylight just after 9 in the morning. The attack also left a criminal dead , one injured and another in police custody. From all reports there were six men who came in a yellow car parked at the head of the street, but only three carried out the attack, while a police hunt is on for the others.

The body of an unidentified man of African descent who is suspected to be one of the bandits was found lying on the roadway with gunshot injuries and another suspect who gave his name as Victor Bobb, 26 years of “B” Field, Pattensen, ECD, was found with severe wounds in the area and is currently in a serious condition receiving medical treatment at the GPHC.

A third suspect was arrested by public-spirited persons in a yard and was handed over to the police.
