Finance Minister Winston Dookeran has today begun his budget presentation in the Upper House.
The 2010/2011 budget was unanimously passed in the Lower House on Friday after four days of marathon debates.
The budget needs to now be passed in the Senate.
Dookeran today explained to Senators that the government’s planned bailout of Clico is the "most fiscally responsible" of three options considered.
 

Members of the Customs Anti Narcotic Unit (CANU ) and members of the Guyana Police Force this morning destroyed a quantity of cocaine worth some half a million US dollars.

One hundred and fifty thousand US dollars worth of marijuana was also destroyed.

Minister of Home Affair Clement Rohee witnessed the destroying of the substances.

According to the Police the majority of cocaine destroyed was destined for the USA, England, South Africa and a few Caribbean territories before being intercepted and seized.

People living along the coastal plain of Guyana will have to be vigilant over the next seven days and take the necessary precaution since there is a predicted unusual high spring tide.

According to information from the Maritime Administration Department within the Works Services Group/Sea Defence , the spring tide is expected to be higher than usual over the next week and twice daily reaching a peak of 2.95 (m CD).

The  Special  Anti-Crime  Unit  of  Trinidad  and  Tobago (SAUTT) is to be transformed, Prime Minister Kamla Persad-Bissessar has said.
Persad-Bissessar made the comment in today’s budget debate.

 

Works Minister Jack Warner has critised Opposition Leader Dr Keith Rowley for his claims that the media and the government are in collusion.
Warner came out in defence of the media in today’s budget debate.

 

Deokie Pooran of Lusignan, East Coast Demerara, another lady and her son were crossing a road at Lusignan on a pedestrian crossing when a truck lost control and hit Pooran then slammed into a car this morning.

According to eyewitnesses it appears as if the truck driver lost control after the brakes of the truck failed.

The injured persons were identified as Mr. Zamar and her 4 year old son.

The dead woman is said to be a cashier at an East Coast Supermarket.

Another suspect in the Essequibo double murder was brought into Police custody by his lawyer today and a gun which belongs to one of the dead man was recovered.

Sunday September 5, 2010 the bodies of businessmen 43 year old Jainarine Ragoobar of Fairfiels Essequibo and Ramdeo Deonarine of Ruby East Bank Essequibo were found tied with wounds in a house at Bartica.

Acting on information received the police arrested five suspects yesterday Wednesday September 15, 2010 and seized four motor cars, one ATV and a quantity of electrical home appliances.
