In celebration of Amerindian Heritage month, the United States of America through the local embassy in Georgetown donated 50,000 high nutritional meals to be distributed to flood affected hinterland villages.

Amerindian Affairs Minister Pauline Sukhai received the donation which was transported to Guyana via the HSV Swift, a naval ship, which docked Guyana’s shores recently.

Residents of Sister’s Village on the West Bank of Demerara woke up at 4 a.m today to find their homes under water.

Some of the residents trying to hold back tears said they lost almost everything in their homes, their furniture, household appliances, vehicles covered with water, poultry and kitchen garden.

The flooding was as a result of a spring tide and poor drainage and irrigation in the area.
