The difference

Local Miss Universe franchise holder, Ian Lee, says he is “quite shocked” that this country’s representative at the Miss Universe Pageant, Latoya Woods, did not make the final 15.
Lee says a “postmortem” will be done, as all indicators showed Woods making the top 15 and being a contender for the crown.
Woods is expected to spend a few days in New York to recuperate before returning to this country.
Miss Mexico Jimena Navarrete was crowned Miss Universe 2010 last night.

Forty seven year old pedal cyclist Rajpaul Jagroop lost his life today after he was hit down by a mini bus. According to the Police at Berbice, Jagroop a neighbourhood Police from Bath on the West Coast of Berbice was riding his bicycle along the roadway when it is alleged that he swerved into the path of a mini bus proceeding in the same direction and was struck down. He was taken to the GPHC where he was pronounced dead on arrival. The driver of the mini bus is in police custody assisting with the investigations.

   New Port of Spain Mayor Louis Lee Sing says there will be a zero tolerance approach by his administration to vagrancy, illegal dumping of garbage and vending on the city streets. Talking tough at City Hall last night, Lee Sing said the PoS market continues to be underutilised while vendors sell illegally on the streets.

THE son and daughter-in-law of deceased businessman Hafeez Karamath were granted a total of $3 million bail by a Port of Spain magistrate today.
Khalil Karamath, and his wife, Sabeera Mohammed, were granted $1.5 million bail each by Senior Magistrate Joan Eversley-Gill in the Port of Spain fourth magistrate’s court.
The duo, from Palm Road, Valsayn, were among six arrested last week following a raid at their home.

WITH the rain that pounded the island this morning, residents are being warned to watch out for landslides in particular areas.
The Organisation for Disaster Preparedness and Management (ODPM) is advising the public to be careful when travelling along the North Coast, Lady Young and the Western Main Roads.
The Met office has said that the country is still being affected by an Inter-Tropical Convergence Zone and, while we are not under a storm watch, rains are expected to continue in different parts of the country until at least 3pm today.

  Education Minister came out with a comprehensive analysis claiming that the six strongest public secondary schools in Guyana are out- performing the six strongest private secondary schools by a ratio of 60 percent. Statistics have showed in the recent CSEC results that the six public schools secured a 76.2 percent pass rate while the six private schools got 20.62 percent.

   Chief Elections Officer Goocool Boodhoo says the second cycle of the continuous registration process will begin on Monday, September 6. This he claims is in accordance with the law and the commencement order and registration offices will be published in the press. According to Boodhoo, the commission will be meeting with the chief scrutineers, next Wednesday, on the preparedness of the registration offices after which the locations of those offices, and official hours of work would be published.

   The African Culture Development Association (ACDA) claims that the organizers of the 170th Anniversary Celebrations in the village of Buxton has used the occasion to demoralize a people struggling to rid themselves of State oppression, poverty, cultural and spiritual depression. The celebrations was to mark African Emancipation but according ACDA it turned out to be a low act of self inflicting damage to a people whose rich issue of struggle, independence, self reliance and opposition to oppressors was compromised in a most disrespectful manner.

   While some Trinidadians are expressing their disappointment over the failure of LaToya Woods to make the top 15 in the Miss Universe Competition last night, they are also praising Miss Jamaica for being the first runner-up to Miss Mexico in last night’s finals in Nevada. In fact some believe Miss Jamaica, Yendi Phillipps was seriously robbed and should have been given the crown.
