Workers threaten to shut down airport

Piarco: Disgruntled workers are warning that there could be a shut down of the Piarco International Airport this weekend over wage negotiations.

The workers say if they proceed with their planned action, flights in and out of the country would be affected and there may be no ground staff.

President of the Public Services Association, the country's largest trade union, Watson Duke says the union will not sanction any such shutdown. Duke says its in no one's interest to negatively affect such an essential service.

However workers say they are unable to trust Duke because they are uncertain about whether he is working in their best interest or for the government. Airport workers have been holding almost daily protests for better wages, allowances and the implementation of a job evaluation that has been delayed because of the involvement of the Chief Personnel Officer.

If they proceed with their plan the workers say it will last throughout the weekend.
