Former prime minister begins protest walk

Port-of-Spain: Suspended San Fernando East Member of Parliament Patrick Manning has commenced a seven day walk from Port-of-Spain to San Fernando to protest his suspension from Parliament by walking some 4.2 miles from the Parliament in Port-of-Spain to the Croisse in San Juan.

The suspended MP says his walk is for all those being unjustly treated by government.

By next Tuesday the walk would end in his constituency. Supporters joined Manning, arriving by maxi, cars and by foot assembling outside the Red House, where over a week ago the decision to suspended Manning for one month was taken.

When he arrived, the former prime minister was given a hero's welcome being greeted by supporters of every age and even some who worked side by side with him in politics.

While many government ministers and MPs poked fun at the suspended MP's decision to walk, his supporters offered him words of hope, telling both him and his wife Hazel to keep the faith. Anglican bishop Calvin Bess led prayers before the walk began.

As Manning and his supporters geared up for the walk, he told supporters it was meant to make a statement against what is taking place in the country at the hands of government

The former prime minister proved his fitness, briskly walking along to the trains of music with a mixture of new and old PNM MPs coming out to show their support. the first phase of the walk ended in San Juan.
