Unions to announce next course of action Thursday

Valsayn: Trade union leaders will announce tomorrow what action they plan to take in light of the stalemate reached in talks with the prime minister and her Cabinet colleagues on Tuesday.

The 18 union leaders met at the Cipriani Labour College in Valsayn tonight, following which the leader of the Oilfield Workers Trade Union, Ancil Roget announced that the unions will announce their position at a news conference in Port-of-Spain at 10 am.

The country is at this time bracing for a national shutdown as unions have rejected a five percent salary cap by the government in negotiations with several state agencies.

The government has already put national security personnel on standby to run the major utilities in light of any sickout action that can result in a shutdown of water and electricity supplies.
