Strokes and heart attacks a major concern

Bridgetown.

Barbadians suffering from strokes and heart attacks are a major worry for health officials, says Dr Kenneth George, Senior Medical Officer in the Medical Officer in the Ministry of Health with responsibility for chronic  non-communicable diseases.

According to George, 559 Barbadians had strokes between 2009 and 2010 and 182 suffered from heart attacks during a month part of that period.

George pointed out that some of of these people did not make it to a hospital and 26  percent of those who were there succumbed to the disease.

"The problem is certainly real, the chronic disease burden is high", said George.
