Opposition slams Minister over brawl with residents

Port-of-Spain: The Opposition Peoples National Movement (PNM) has issued strong condemnation of what it says was the disgraceful public display of arrogance and overt disregard by Mayaro MP, Minister of the Arts and Multiculturalism, Winston Peters with residents of Mayaro last Sunday.

The MP and a constituent were involved in a verbal battle, with the constituent accusing the MP of failing to fix the roads in the constituency.

The PNM contends that the outlandish behaviour by MP Peters in full view of the national community is in direct violation of the oath of office taken by elected Members of Parliament who pledge to serve all citizens.

The party says it is concerned that the Minister's behaviour was confirmation of its fears that the UNC Government discriminates against citizens who they perceive as supporters of the PNM.

The Opposition says Government should be reminded that the Constitution gives every citizen the right to support the political party of their choice and that this and all other rights should in no way be diminished, circumvented or negatively impacted because of perceived political affiliation.
