Manning ruled in breach Parliamentary Privileges; facing suspension

Port-of-Spain: Former Prime Minister Patrick Manning has been found in contempt of Parliament for allegations which he made last November against Prime Minister Kamla Persad-Bissessar.

In delivering the ruling of Parliament's Privileges Committee Leader of Government Business Dr Roodal Moonilal says Manning was given numerous opportunities by the Privileges Committee to explain and present evidence to back his claims but failed to do so embarking instead on legal action, a failed motion and indicating time and again that he could not attend hearings of the committee.

Manning had requested legal representation at the committee hearings but Dr Moonilal says the committee is inquisitorial in nature and not a court of law. Even so he says Manning walked with his attorneys including former AG John Jeremie when he did appear before the committee but never produced any evidence to support his claims made against the prime minister.
