US recommits to help TT fight drugs

Port-of-Spain: There is a renewed commitment from the United States' Government to help Trinidad and Tobago address issues of rising crime and the influx of drugs and guns into the country.

It came today from US Ambassador to Trinidad and Tobago Beatrice Walters as she addressed a conference on ethics and professionalism in the criminal justice system this morning.

Meantime Trinidad and Tobago has renewed its call for the international criminal court to include crimes involving the illicit traffic in narcotic drugs and psychotropic substances into the Rome Statute. The call came from Foreign Affairs Minister Dr Suruj Rambachan as he addressed the Caricom Regional Seminar on the Rome Statute of the International Criminal Court being held in Port-of-Spain.

Trinidad and Tobago has been a transshipment point for drugs originating in South America, but has been largely supported by the US in drug eradication mechanisms.
