Georgetown : The distribution of cheques for the construction and refurbishing of infrastructural facilities to house Information Communication Technology (ICT) hubs in hinterland communities is underway.
Minister of Amerindian Affairs Pauline Sukhai recently handed over cheques valued $800,000 to the Toshaos of several communities in Upper Mazaruni, Region 7. These include Kaikan, Jawalla, Waramadong, Kangaruma, Paruima, Phillipai and Kamarang/Warawatta.
The cheque distribution exercise is related to the One Laptop per Family (OLPF) hinterland component. Minister Sukhai said that after the completion of the first hub, she believes it will be a historical mark in the hinterland because it will mean that Amerindians will also be a part of the extension of ICT development in Guyana.
The OLPF initiative came into being in 2011, with the aim of equipping 90,000 families with laptops.
Another distribution of cheques will be done shortly by the Amerindian Affairs Ministry to 39 communities in Region 9.
