TB cases reduced by 20% last year- CMO

Georgetown : Chief Medical Officer (CMO), Dr. Shamdeo Persaud disclosed that Guyana recorded a 20 percent reduction last year in tuberculosis (TB) cases compared to 2012.

 

 

TB is considered as the eighth cause of death worldwide since every year there are millions of new infections and corresponding deaths.

 Work has commenced on the establishment of a national facility to better manage TB infected patients, particularly those that are homeless. This project is being done in collaboration with the Centre for Disease Control (CDC) and the Global Fund.

The CMO said that Georgetown Public Hospital Corporation (GPHC) has performed well in terms of offering specialised services,  these include the diabetic clinic, the family health unit and the infections and disease unit.

Tuberculosis is a recognisable global threat to public health and hinders efforts towards ending poverty however, this illness is preventable, treatable and curable once detected, and the stipulated treatment period is completed.
