Attorney General not touching Anti-Gang legislation

Port-of-Spain: Attorney General Anand Ramlogan is dismissing calls for amendments to the Anti-Gang legislation saying there is no need to change it.

The AG maintains the act has not failed despite the state’s inability to prosecute several persons charged for gang offences due to a lack of evidence.

From 12 murders in three days to15 murders for the entire month of September, Ramlogan believes the State of Emergency and Curfew are working.

Ramlogan explained that the solution is in the effective training of law enforcement officials to gather the required evidence to assist with prosecution.

In light of reports that persons who were detained under the legislation and subsequently freed may be suing the state for wrongful imprisonment, Ramlogan says he's keeping a close eye on the situation.

Ramlogan also claims that several regional governments have begun to express interest in the success of the State of Emergency.
