Two murders, two shootings as crime continues under State of Emergency

St Joseph: Police Public Information Officer ASP Joanne Archie says several crimes overnight continue to engage the attention of the police among them two murders in Maracas, St Joseph.

Acting on information from an anonymous caller police went to a trace near to of Ortinola Estate in Maracas St Joseph where they found the bullet riddled bodies of Akiel Bristol and Nicholas Ashton.

The men were found with gunshots to their heads and chest in a black Mazda 323 Hatchback motor car. Archie says investigations continue to determine whether the murders were drug related.

Meanwhile a 71-year old pensioner from Lange Park in Central Trinidad is now warded at the Eric Williams Medical Sciences Complex after being shot by an intruder at his home.

Reports are the victim, Leford Ayres went to his bathroom and left a door to his home open. A similar incident occurred in Montrose when the intruder was again wearing a blue bandanna and shot his victim without stealing anything. Archie says they don't have enough information to make a link in both incidents.

In the second incident in montrose the man also remains hospitalised.

Meanwhile there is an assurance from the police service that they have not let up in the battle against gangs although there have been no gang-related arrests for several weeks.

Several persons detained under the Anti-Gang legislation have walked free because of a lack of evidence but police say they continue to pursue all reports of gang related crimes.

Arrests under the legislation have been stuck on 449 for the past three weeks and of that number just under 200 people charged have been freed for a lack of evidence, including two well-known community leaders.
