Shut-down of state oil company looms

Pointe-a-Pierre: A major shutdown of State-owned oil company, Petrotrin is looming after workers walked off the job, effectively bringing to a halt 85% of Petrotrin's refinery system.

This follows a breakdown of talks between the union and Petrotrin management.

According to the Oilfields Workers Trade Union which represents Petrotrin workers, there had been safety concerns with regard to the company's operations.

The union, led by President General Ancil Roget held talks with the state-owned oil company's management on Tuesday on the matters, but the talks lasted for just over an hour before they broke down.

This has led to workers from all units walking off the job today and the union describes the refinery as a ticking time bomb, since just one unit remains up and running.

By Thursday, the Exploration and Production units are expected to join in on the industrial action.

Petrotrin confirms the industrial action at the company saying since Sunday workers have not beein reporting for duty at the refinery and it has been forced to shutdown 11 process units.

However, Petrotrin in a statement says there is an adequate supply of products for the national community.
