Region 9, Essequibo – Residents of Region nine, Upper Takatu, Upper Essequibo and surrounding areas will be able to benefit more easily from the National Insurance Scheme (NIS) with the new office in that region.

According to the Government, contributors and pensioners will not have to travel all the way to the capital city, Georgetown to transact NIS business.
This new office brings the number to 14 offices NIS has across the country.
 

Georgetown–  There have been many comments and concerns from members of society since last year about the possible civil unrest expected ahead of the 2011 general elections. At the brink of the new year, some believe that these concerns have been vindicated with the current state of affairs. While the politicians are not saying whether the current attacks and bomb scares are politically motivated, sections of society are beginning to put the pieces together based on Guyana’s political and election history.

Georgetown– Doctors are trying desperately to save Kaneville businessman Majeed Khan who is listed as critical at the Georgetown Hospital with a gunshot wound to his chest. The hospital is unable to say whether the bullet hit any vital organs at this time. Khan reportedly had emergency surgery last evening. The man was wounded after a group of masked gunmen entered his business place last evening,. They attacked the family of five and made off with over $150,000 in cash along with other items, but not before shooting the shop owner in the chest.
