Upgrade for teachers

Bridgetown.

The Ministry of Education and the Caribbean Development Bank have launch an initiative to upgrade teachers and classrooms in Barbados.

The Education Sector Enhancement Project is expected to upgrade 194 classrooms, train 1280 teachers and benefit over 18,700 students.

Speaking at the launch of the project, Senior Education Officer in the Ministry of Education Dr Roderick Rudder said:" We must start this project, not from the bottom up but from the top down, starting with those who prepare our teachers.We have to reassess the curriculum at the Erdiston Teachers 'Training College, the assessment tools that are used and even the background capacity of the tutors and lecturers".

"The project is the integral to the achievement of the goals articulated in the Barbados Human Resoource Development Strategy, and is designed to assist the Barbados Government to better plan for its investments in the education sector", he added.

Rudder said that improved teacher effectiveness and school leadership would be an integral component of the project.

The physical component of the project would involve reconstruction work at Wesly Hall, Mangrove, St Martin's, Boscobel, St Elizabeth and Chalky Mount primary schools.

The project will target eight principals and 220 teachers in school leadership and teacher effectiveness across pilot schools.
