UNFCCC meeting being held in Barbados

The last of four expert meetings of the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC) began in Barbados at the Hilton Hotel yesterday.

At the opening ceremony executive director of UNFCCC, Christiana Figueres said major challenges for Small Island Developing States (SIDS) were the similarly fragile economy with high dependence on external resources .the high level on external resources, the level of exposure as a result of most of the infastructure being located in the costal one greater intensity of natural disasters and insurance coverage that is increasingly unavailable or unaffordable as many impact and assets are uninsurable.

She stated climate change is no longer an environmental issue but one of the most serious and international policy challenges facing mankind.

The meeting ends tomorrow.
