Georgetown : The Ministerial Task Force on Trafficking in Persons (TIP), which is chaired by Home Affairs Minister, Clement Rohee met with a delegation from the US Embassy and the US State Department office on TIP led by US Chargé d' Affaires Bryan Hunt.
The meeting which was held at the Home Affairs Ministry’s boardroom at Brickdam yesterday saw the presence of several Government Ministers including Minister of Foreign Affairs, Carolyn Rodrigues-Birkett, Minister of Human Services and Social Security, Jennifer Webster, Minister of Natural Resources and Environment, Robert Persaud, Minister of Amerindian Affairs, Pauline Sukhai and Commissioner of Police (ag), Seelall Persaud.
Minister Rohee said that this is an ongoing engagement; noting that the meeting between the two parties allows for the exchange of views and information on the issue of human trafficking. The Ministerial Task Force was created under the Combating of Trafficking in Persons Act No. 2 of 2005, which is as a result of the Government’s recognition of the seriousness of trafficking in persons and its act to eradicate and prevent same.
It comprises the Ministries of Home Affairs; Labour, Human Services and Social Security; Legal Affairs; Foreign Affairs; Amerindian Affairs; Guyana Geology and Mines Commission; Guyana Police Force; Indigenous Peoples’ Association; Help & Shelter; Food for the Poor; and the Chambers of the Director of Public Prosecutions
Last month, the Task Force launched a new action plan 2014-2015, which will be implemented in a two-year period.
TIP is an estimated US $32B per year global industry; after drug-trafficking and it is world’s second most profitable criminal enterprise, a status it shares with trafficking in illegal arms.
