Time for a solar revolution says Prime Minister

Bridgetown.

Prime Minister Freundel Stuart is calling for a second solar revolution in Barbados. The first solar revolution took place in the 1970s with the introduction of solar for heating water.

Now Stuart is calling for a second wave of that revolution by transforming roofs into micro power plants for the generation of electricity.

Speaking during the opening of Energy Week at the Hilton Hotel, Stuart said: "Since it is recognised that fossil fuels will be with us for sometime, the policy of the Government is to aim for a target of 29 percent of all electricity in this country being generated from renewable energy sources by 2029 and the reduction of electricity consumption by 22 percent the same year".

"I am advised that based on the declining cost of renewable technolgies, the project of 29 percent may well be too conservative and I am heartened by this possibility", the Prime Minister added.

Stuart said this objective can be achieved by use of solar, wind, biomass, waste to energy and land fill gas to energy sources which are all viable alternatives that are in various stages of planning and exceution.
