THA pension payments affected over Central Government’s change of rules

Tobago: The Tobago House of Assembly says that controversy over the appointment of a new five-member Local Public Assistance Board is holding up the processing of an undisclosed number of applications for pension and other social assistance from Tobagonians.

The THA says it has been making recommendations to the Central Government on the appointment of board members for the past three decades and these have been accepted.

THA Chief Secretary Orville London has said the assembly submitted its recommendations for the appointment of four members to the vacant positions to the Ministry of the People and Social Development.

However, the THA says Minister Glen Ramadarsingh went ahead and appointed his own board members, one of whom was dead and another refused to take up the appointment made by the president.

London said the three remaining members came to Tobago and had a meeting in January and the next meeting was fixed for February 14th but the statement says that he was hoping that good sense would prevail and the Minister would accept the recommendation of the Assembly and appoint its nominees who came from five geographical areas of the island.
