Student stabbed in eye outside school

Diego Martin: A 53 year-old mother is in police custody after being held for a vicious attack on a student who was involved in a fight with her daughter, when she stabbed the student in her eye with a pencil.

The incident occured outside the Diego Martin North Secondary School just after 1:30 this afternoon.

Police reports say the Form Two student was involved in a fight outside the school compund with two other female students. The police could not say why or how the students were outside the school, but reports say the 53-year-old mother of one of the other students intervened in the fracas and stabbed the form two student in her left eye with a pencil.

Residents of the area, who saw the commotiion intervened calling the police and rushed the girl to the Port-of-Spain General Hospital, where an emergency surgery was performed.

The police say so vicious was the attack that the pencil broke in the eye of the student, with a piece remaining lodged in the girl's eye. The 53 year-old mother has since been held and is detained at the West End Police Station.

It's the latest case of school violence to occur. A few weeks again a 14-year-old student was brutally beaten by another student at the San Fernando Secondary School.
