Strike action looms at state-oil company

San Fernando: There is confirmation from state-owned Petrotrin that it is now preparing for a strike by workers.

It will be a crippling blow to the company in the face of rising world oil prices but the company is appealing to workers to let good sense prevail.

In a statement issued within minutes of receiving strike notice Petrotrin expressed dismay and disappointment with the planned strike saying it will impact negatively on the revenue earnings of the company.

More than that it says the country would lose significant revenue at a time when oil prices are high.

The company says it was unfair that the decision came after only two conciliation meetings, saying the process was not given sufficient time to yield in its opinion a win-win situation.

Petrotrin says any prolonged work stoppage would be a lose-lose prospect for the employees, the company and the country.

It says it remains fully committed to continuing the dialogue with their workers and their representatives to reach an amicable solution.

Petrotrin is also committing to pursue the interest of all stake holders and is issuing a strong appeal to employees and their representatives to put the national interest foremost.

As motorists rush to purchase gas the company is seeking to assure that arrangements are in place to continue to provide an uninterrupted supply of petroleum products.
