Strike action at CBC averted

Bridgetown.

Strike action against the Caribbean Broadcasting Corporation (CBC) by the Barbados Workers' Union (BWU)  has been averted after the state run radio and television station agreed that incremented would be paid to workers and disusssion would shortly take place regarding the associated retroative payment.

General Secretary of the BWU Sir Roy Trotman told journalists yesterday industrial action had become a possibility since the CBC had discontinued the payment of increments and still not put a performance appraisal system in place as it should have.

"It was understood that when the appraisal system was put in place, the increments would continued. CBC had not put the increments in place and had not put the performance appraisal system in place and had not paid the increments. We had sme rather serious discussions and we made plans what we would  do to vindicate the cause of the workers of the CBC", Sir Roy said.

"I am pleased to report that with the assistance of Minister of Labour  Dr Esther Byer-Suckoo,  we were able to get a commitment from the CBC that honour they  would honour their obligation regarding those increments and  will submit a proposal performance appraisal, which the BWU believes we shall receive some time before the end of the year", Sir Roy said.
