Snatch and grab earning millions

Bridgetown.

Criminals have earned almost a $1million from snatch and grab crimes in the first two months of the year and if left unchecked, it can surpass $6 million by yearend.

This was revealed by Commissioner of Police Darwin Dottin during a press conference at Police Headquarters yesterday.

Dottin said that Barbadians were robbed of $353,123.85 worth of jewllery in January and that the figure had almost double last month when jewllery worth $623,845,27 was stolen.

"If we don't take drastic action, that number could easily reach $6 million by the end of the year", the Commissioner calculated.

He added that the increase use of physical violence by the perpetrators involved in the snatch and grab crimes was also of serious concerns to lawmen.

Dottin said Barbadians were being targeted by criminals using stealth methods, including profiling the people they considered vunerable such as the elderly or absent minded individuals on public or private transport.

He give an example of an eldery woman being attack in daylight and her jewllery taken while garden.

According to the Commissioner, police intelligence showed that most profiling of the victims  took place in the wider Bridgetown area or in the bus terminals.
