Sixty workers on the breadline

Bridgetown.

Sixty workers from  Rayside Construction Ltd are being laid off today.

The decision to lay off the weekly paid workers  was made after a two-hour meeting between officials from the Barbados Workers’ Union (BWU)  and the company’s management.

Some of the  workers, who are mainly involved in road construction, said their notices indicated that they would only be out of work for one week but others  them fear they could be laid off for much longer, having been told by management last Friday to collect their documents on Monday  to take to the National Insurance Department for unemployment benefits.

Rayside Construction Ltd is one of the leading construction companies is Barbados. In June C.O. Williams laid off 35 members of its road construction staff.
