Seven more go free under Anti-Gang legislation

Port-of-Spain: Two well-known community leaders were freed by the courts this morning after the Director of Public Prosecutions (DPP) office again said it simply had no evidence to puruse any charges aganst them.

Vaughn Mieres also called "Sandman"  and Cassius "Cas" Williams were among seven men who were brought before Chief Magistrate Marcia Ayres Caesar in the Port-of-Spain Eighth Magistrate's Court.

However, when the matter was called for hearing, attorney George Busby from the DPP's office appeared, saying there was no evidence to prosecute the men and to proceed with a case against them.

26 year-old Cassius Williams from the Beetham Gardens was arrested in Tobago, while 43-year-old Meires also called Sandman surrended to the police in September.

The community leaders as well as the other five men were arrested under the Anti-Gang legislation. It's the latest release of suspects.

Last Thursday 24 people were freed over a lack of evidence in South Trinidad, while the police service indicated that 147 held under the Anti-Gang legislation did not face gang charges.

The release of alleged gangsters began when 22 men from Nelson Street in Port-of-Spain were released over a lack of evidence.
