Serious crime on the rise in Guyana- PNC/R

Georgetown: Murders and other serious crimes including domestic violence and robberies of business places appear to be the order of the day. This is according to the main opposition party at it's weekly press conference. The party stated that the Government must have the political will to implement the various recommendations of the Disciplined Forces Commission (D.F.C.) and the Security Sector Reform Action Plan (S.S.R.P.), the latter being the proposal of the British.

The PNCR says it has long called for the Guyana Police Force’s (G.P.F.) investigative and preventative capacities to be increased by such interventions. Among the recommendations of the D.F.C. are:
(i) That a sound national criminal intelligence system should be established and maintained, and

(ii) That the G.P.F. members should be encouraged to identify potential informants and gain their trust.
These two recommendations are vital in crime prevention.
On the investigative side it was recommended that the G.P.F. acquire the means to conduct D.N.A. testing, staff the G.P.F’s Scientific Laboratory with people who need not carry police rank and train more personnel in handwriting, finger-printing, ballistics and related fields. PNC/R explained that
the importance of gun control cannot be over emphasized. The proliferation of guns in Guyana has exacerbated the crime situation in Guyana . There is no question that our porous borders facilitate the availability of guns in Guyana . The Government must, therefore, rise to the challenge of securing our borders added the party.
The party in conclusion said that the Government must not lose sight of the need to pay policemen and policewomen a living wage and to improve their conditions of work.
