Second largest party in Government threatens to pull out

San Fernando: The Congress of the People is threatening to break ranks with the People's Partnership if the government does not appoint a Congress member as Mayor of San Fernando.

It's part of a widening rift triggered by the UNC internal elections which saw Congress member Marlene Coudray shifting allegiances.

In 2010 Coudray was appointed Mayor of San Fernando on the recommendation of the Congress of the People.

Last Saturday she was elected a UNC deputy political leader in the party's internal election after switching allegiances from the COP to the UNC.

Her decision has created a rift within the parties with Congress officials accusing the UNC of poachng on its territory and on Tuesday Congress Leader Prakash Ramadhar took it a step further accusing the government of the peoples partnership of reneging  on the Fyzabad accord.

He says if outstanding issues are not addressed it could mean the end of the partnership.

Under the Fyzabad accord it was agreed that should the Parnership win certain seats in the July 2010 Local Government Election the mayoral positions in both the San Fernando City Council and the Arima Borough Council will be given to them.
