Rose Hall Town

Rose Hall is located 14 miles east of New Amsterdam, and is the smallest town in Guyana. The town was first owned by Dutch planters, and served as a housing settlement for persons working on nearby plantations. Following Emancipation the settlement was purchased by field slaves, thus making it-today-an area that is predominantly inhabited by Afro-Guyanese. Rose hall received village status in 1908, and became a township in 1970. The town which has a population of 8,000 is divided into three wards: Middle Rose Hall, East Rose Hall, and Williamsburg.

Because of its location, the little town is bursting with economic activity. And serves as a hub for

traders from New Amsterdam, Rosignol, Orealla, Skeldon and Suriname. The rice and sugar industries have contributed greatly to the growth and development of the town, in addition to activities such as cattle rearing and coconut production. However, Rose Hall is prime for more than just agriculture and trading raw materials. Over the last few years a wide range of businesses have begun to spring up. As a result, the town's main street is lined with a myriad of clothing stores, pharmacies, general merchandising outlets, two banks, a number of bars, cafes and restaurant, and most recently a mini-mall which houses the popular fast food outlets Church's and Mario's. Rose Hall is home to one of the best markets in Berbice; known for the wide selection of goods that can be found there, and is known throughout Berbice as the "Friday market" destination.

The town has become quite popular as a party destination, with its growing number of night clubs. Additionally, Rose Hall is home to one of the three recreational beaches that can be found in Berbice.  The town's main recreational event is its Annual Town Week celebrations. The celebration is held in September, and commemorates Rose Hall's move to township.

Although, the Town's infrastructure could be improved the residents of Rose Hall still describe it as one of the best places to live, as well as conduct any type of business.

One resident said, “Its almost like a tiny city, everything you could possibly want or need is right here”. The proprietor of Poonai's Pharmacy described the town as being the best of both worlds: “Rose Hall is the perfect place for when you need to get away and experience some of that country relaxation, but then it’s also the ideal place to invest in if you want to embark on a successful business venture”.
