Protests as HDC destroys farmers’ crops

ARIMA: Dozens of residents and farmers in Pineapple Crescent, Mausica are planning to protest in front of the head offices of the Housing Development Corporation (HDC) on Tuesday, after the HDC took action to clear land in their area this morning.

Over 35 acres of land occupied by farmers were cleared by bulldozers under instructions by the HDC, a state corporation.

The property has been earmarked for housing development but the farmers argue that they have been occupying the land for several years and that their livelihoods are now being affected.

Several residents came out to object to the HDC's actions prompting several police officers to move in. However the matter did not escalate any further,
