Protestors converge at PM’s office demanding an audience

Prime Minister Kamla Persad-Bissessar has agreed to meet with a group of protesters who spent over five hours outside her St Clair office today.

Members of the group the Highway Reroute Movement  and residents of Savonetta are demanding the prime minister's intervention on two major controversial projects.

They were led by environmentalist Dr Wayne Kublalsingh in their bid to deliver a letter to the prime minister on the negative effects of the construction of the Carisal Chemical Plant in Savonetta and passage of the Point Fortin highway through Mon Desir.

Their arrival coincided with the weekly Cabinet meeting but they sat down saying they were well prepared to wait since they wanted to deliver the letter to the prime minister directly.

Two hours later after much prayers and chanting, Local Government Minister Chandresh Sharma came out of the meeting.

Minister Sharma is MP for Fyzabad where the highway will pass.

He attempted to see the protesters but was jeered.

Dr Kublalsingh was adamant they wanted nothing less than the prime minister's personal intervention.

After six hours Dr Kublalsingh finally got a call from  the prime minister's protocol officer Barry Paradath, telling him the prime minister would meet with a small group of them on Friday in Parliament.
