Property owner urged to rufurbish old buildings

Bridgetown.

Property owners in Bridgetown have been urged by Minister of Culture Stephen Lashley to move with alacrity to refurbish some of the old buildings in area.

Speaking to members of the Barbados Chamber of Industy and Commerce who operate businesses in Bridgetown, Lashley underscored the benefits of Historic Bridgetown and its Garrison being a World Heritage site.

Acknowledging that some property owners were staying from refurbishing their structures, he suggested that they turn  these building into either  properties  of commerce or properties of culural interest, protecting their businesses and bringing life back into Bridgetown,

"There is also an opportunity to turn these buildings into cultural spaces", Lashley said.

Outlining some of the economic benefits of restoration, the Minister said:"Rehabilation costs are roughly the same as building a new structure and it creates jobs and supports small businesses".
