Prisoners riot at mental institution

St Ann's: Officials of the North West Regional Health Authority (NWRHA) say a comprehensive investigative has been launched into a riot on Ward 27 which houses prisoners at the St Anns Medical Institution.

An official report says staff were in the process of changing shift when four patients engaged in threatening and potentially violent behavior towards the staff.

Both staff and security personnel attempted to quell the situation but were unsuccessful.

Belmont police were called in and officers arrived quickly taking charge of the situation.

The NWRHA says no staff or patients were injured during the incident but PSA president Watson Duke says he is concerned by what he's been hearing from staff at the institution.

Duke says the situation warrants an investigation by Health Minister Dr Fuad Khan.

The NWRHA confirmed that the Forensic Ward  was 77% occupied at the time and there were   five nurses and one enrolled nursing assistant on duty.

It says there are three security officers posted in front of the ward on a 24-7 basis.

It says it will provide counseling for its staff members that were involved in the incident.
