Police say no crackdown on curfew parties

Port-of-Spain: The Police Service has denied there is any move to clamp down on club and bar owners holding curfew parties during the State of Emergency.

The police service is says its announcement was simply in the interest of citizens safety. They say they can only caution against but not stop the parties.

Last week officials appealed to club and bar owners to desist from holding these events saying they endangered the lives of those who attend. At a news conference today Public Information Officer Joanne Archie clarified that while they are appealing to the club and bar owners there is no crackdown on these businesses.

Archie said curfew parties do not fall under the curfew regulations and they are being held under legitimate licenses.

Over the weekend 24 persons were arrested for drinking and driving. Archie is sending a warning to those who continue to drink and drive. She says since the State of Emergency was instituted on August 21st,  2,484 arrests have been made, including 449 for gang-related offences.
