Georgetown: Pegasus is exploring alternative energy sources including wind energy, and if all goes as planned the hotel expects to be the first green hotel in the country, Managing Director and owner of the Pegasus Hotel, Robert Badal.
This was revealed at Pegasus’s annual customer appreciation cocktail held at the hotel Friday evening to usher in the season of festivity.
The Businessman is spending US$8 million to upgrade the Pegasus Hotel which he bought over from Le Meridien three years ago.
Badal is investing in the Pegasus at a time when he now has to compete with efforts by the government to establish a Marriott-branded hotel right next to his hotel.
He said since the existence of the hotel, the Pegasus has contributed immensely to the local economy since it employs in excess of over 200 persons; earn significant foreign exchange along with paying “huge amount of taxes.”
“It provides an ideal environment for business exchanges between foreign and local businesses and diplomatic missions which leads to growth in the local business sector and the economy as a whole.”
He said Pegasus contributes to many charity functions in the form of funds and direct contributions in the form of annual discounts and free facilitation. This is a part of an overall policy of the hotel being a good corporate citizen.
“Soon after taking up the leadership of the company I outlined a plan for extensive upgrades, little did I appreciate the work, analysis and investments etc. This was further inhibited by lack of local expertise at the level required to meet the high standards, which placed Pegasus amongst the top luxury hotels in the region, thus actual work on the property has taken longer than expected.”
Underscoring the renovation works done to date on the hotel, the Managing Director said the entire tower block of 97 rooms has been completed except the sixth floor, an elaborate bar known as the ignite bar has been added to the new décor, and this has transformed the centre of the building, the new Aroma Café has been added along with a new Latino wine, the lobby has been completed, and other amenities have been included along with a new power generation.
If the demand justifies it, he could add a new tower comprising 150 one-bedroom suites providing ultra-modern world class facilities.
He further noted that in two weeks there will be a complete gym and fitness centre, in addition all material have arrived to change the façade of the hotel, by the end of January 2013.
“This property in its 43 years has never received anything remotely close to such transformation, and all works are to be completed at the end of 2013.”
The Pegasus was graced by Royalty and Heads of State alike, it’s known as the true flag bearer of Guyanese hospitality since 1969.
