Parliament congratulates Jamaica and Trinidad

Bridgetown.

The Parliament of Barbados, yesterday offered belated 50th birthday congratulations to the Government and people of Jamaica on attaining 50 years of Independence earlier this month and then offerd  early 50th birthday salutations to the Government and people of Trinidad and Tobago who will reach the historic landmark on August 31.

Prime Minister Freundel Stuart ,who piloted the resolution in the House of Assembly said the independence experiment has worked, both Jamaica and Trinidad and Tobago have made their mark on the international sage and contributed to the development of the people of the region.

Stuart said it was coincidental but extremely symbolic, that the two countries would be celebrating their 50th birthdays at a time when their athletes had showcased their brilliance at the London Olympic Games.

"We are as talented and as resourceful as any people, anywhere else in the world, there is something wrong if we believe we are inferiour to people anywhere else in the world", Stuart said.

Opposition Leader Owen Arthur lauded the performance of the regional athletes at the London Olympic Games  while congratulating Jamaica and Trinidad and Tobago on the attianment of their 50th anniversary of independence.

Arthur who resided in Jamaica for ten years, told Parliament he is writing his memoirs titled "A Country Boy" which chronicles his experience as a Barbadian living there.
