Over 1500 marijuana plants found by lawmen

Bridgetown.

Police officers are curtailing the cultivation of marijuana plants in Barbados.

"We were able to make quite a few seizures last year and we have started this year with some success as well", head of the drug squad Superintendent Grafton Phillips told the media yesterday.

He was speaking after a joint operation by the drug squad and the marine section of the force discovered over 1500 marijuana plants at several areas across the island.

Phillips said, since the demand for marijuana was high he expected a more work for his officers in the future.

"The real concern in Barbados is consumption. We have found that marijuana comsumption in Barbados is very high, so that leads to a large demand for the drug, and more poeple will obviously attempt to get involved in cultivation". he explained.

Phillips identify rural Barbados as a popular spots for the cultivation of  ganga crops, since most of the marijuana plants were found in St Joseph,St George, St Andrew and St John.

"There are areas remain remote and not many people traverse them daily, so planters feels they can work in safety", Phillips said.

He added that the police were thankful for the information provided by the public recently.
