OPR investigates cavity search of teen at Ogle airport

Georgetown: The Office of Professional Responsibility (OPR) has launched an investigation into the alleged stripping and cavity search of a teen at the Eugene F. Correia International Airport, Ogle East Coast Demerara by of the Force’s Narcotics Branch on Sunday, February 25, 2018.

In responding to an article in Stabroek News under the caption ‘Family seeking legal advice after cavity search of teen’, Press Officer Superintendent Jairam Ramlakhan said a statement has been obtained from the female rank who denied to have conducted a cavity search on the teen who was an outgoing passenger to Barbados.

“The Force wishes to acknowledge that the search of the 17 year-old at the Eugene F Correira International Airport last Sunday was conducted by a female rank of the Force ‘s Narcotics Branch and that an investigation has since been launched by the Office of Professional Responsibility (OPR),” he said.

According to news report, on Monday, the teen related that she was informed by the officer that she had to do a strip search and was directed to a room.

In that room, the teen claimed that she was asked to strip naked and the officer even inserted her finger into the teen’s private parts.

The young woman said she is seeking a public apology from the agency.
