Opposition promises support for full removal from Privy Council to CCJ

Port-of-Spain: Opposition Leader Dr Keith Rowley says the Opposition will give the goverment their full support on legislation to replace the British Privy Council with the Caribbean Court of Justice only if the civil matters are also included in the switch.

Dr Rowley says he was happy to hear the Prime Minister's announcement Wednesday that the CCJ would become this country's final appelate court replacing the Privy Council.

One of the partners in Government, the Congress of the People wants a referendum on it but Dr Rowley believes it's unnecessary.

He says even if it were to go to a referendum the Opposition will tell the population how to vote.

The Government needs a special majority in Parliament to effect the legislation.
