Opposition party in money battle with state transport corporation

Port-of-Spain: The Opposition People's National Movement (PNM) has told the Public Transport Services Corporation (PTSC) that it would not be intimidated by any deadline to clear a debt with the corporation, owed from the use of buses to transport supporters during the 2010 election campaign.

The PTSC has given the PNM 14 days to pay a bill of over $100,000. The party's general secretary, Ashton Forde said today that while he has received a legal letter from the corporation it was not accompanied by any invoices. He says the matter has been referred to the PNM's attorneys.

"I find it very strange that I get a letter, first of all it was published in the newspapers and then went on to attack the last chairman and make threats. The party will not be intimidated by any threats. We would honour our debts. They have not given any invoices to us, to attend to this decree that they are now making," Forde said.

Forde says his party has, however, been paying its arrears.

"I find it very unethical for PTSC to transact business as a state enterprise with a client via the media. Nevertheless, I can confirm that the party made payments of $297,250 in May last year and $44,200 in February this year. It was paid in accordance with the submission of invoices and discussions with the PTSC," he added.
