Newborn made ward of the state after parents refuse medical help

Sangre Grande: A baby boy who was made a ward of the court after his parents refused medical treatment, has been discharged from hospital and released into the care of his parents but remains a ward of the state.

The matter was called before Justice Joseph Tam in the Family Court today, with the 30-year-old father of the infant appearing along with the reverend of the Evangelical church he attends. Attorney-at-law Kelvin Ramkisoon represented the Eastern Regional Health Authority in the matter.

The court heard that the unnamed baby boy has improved considerably after receiving treatment at the Sangre Grande Hospital, so much so that he was discharged into his parents care.

The infant's 29 year-old mother and father both of Darmanie Hill, Sangre Grande refused treatment for the infant who was diagnosed with acute jaundice, which could have led to cardiac arrest or brain damage.

This prompted the authorities to petition the High Court, which made the baby boy a ward of the court.

Although the infant has been released into the care of his parents, he remains a ward of the court for a year and has to be brought to the hospital every two days for his progress to be monitored.

If during the year, any life saving treatment is refused for the child, he will be removed from his parents care. To date the parents have not disclosed the reason why they refused urgent medical care for the baby boy.
