New molasses tanks for the Bridgetown Port

Bridgetown.

The Government of Barbados are constructing three molasses terminals at the Bridgetown Port replacing existing tanks that are in a state of disrepair.

The concrete tanks, to be built at a cost of $12 million were described by Minister of Agiculture David Estwick as money well spent because of their 70 year life span.

According to Estwick , the rum industry which contributes about US$40 miillion to Barbados economy annually had long been under threat because of improper storage facilities for its most integral ingredient, molasses.

"This project, is a critical one for sustaining the rum industry in Barbados",  Estwick told the media.

He emphasized that the project was indigenous in terms of labour and material and would  therefore not cause foreign exchange to leave the country.

Construction of the terminals will start in the next three weeks. Managing Director of Preconco Limited Mark Maloney, the construction company building the terminals says about 75 people will be employed on the project.
