Near 1500 arrested under State of Emergency

Port-of-Spain: Police Commissioner Dwayne Gibbs says a total of 1,477 persons have been arrested since the State of Emergency was instituted 16 days ago.

Addressing a news conference to update the country on the status of arrests and guns and ammunition found during the State of Emergency, Commissioner Gibbs also indicated that of this 432 were gang related.

Meantime Prisons Commissioner John Rougier says prior to the State of Emergency there were 3,800 prisoners and since the State of Emergency that number has increased to 4,321.

Some 243 of those arrested he says were placed in a faclity which was previously  used for high risk prisoners.

He says the over-crowding problem in the prisons will be further addressed with the coming on stream by week's end of a new prison at Santa Rosa.
