National Museum Staff benefits from GTA’s Training Programme

National MuseumGeorgetown: The Ministry of Tourism and the Guyana Tourism Authority (GTA) continue to demonstrate their commitment to capacity building and institutional strengthening within the sector, by facilitating numerous training programmes and by providing opportunities for the development of skills.

The Guyana National Museum was the most recent entity to benefit from a training session on Effective Customer Service, held during their Staff Development Workshop on November 25th at the National Museum.

During the ½ day session, facilitated by the Director of the Guyana Tourism Authority, Mr. Indranauth Haralsingh, the participants were reminded that positive interaction is key to delivering effective customer service.

He emphasized too that all members of staff play an integral role in improving the visitor experience.

“Every support member can master the skills of excellent customer service, this will drastically improve your interactions with customers, visitors and tourists,” Mr. Haralsingh explained.

The session addressed several key topics including the importance of customers, basics of customer service, effective communication including greeting customers and ground rules in providing quality customer service.

During the session participants were also provided with an opportunity to share their views and experiences of good and bad customer service.

 According to the GTA Director, the continuation of the training programmes is aimed at ensuring that the Authority imparts valuable information to service providers to improve the quality and standards of their products and services, in keeping with the GTA’s mandate.

The interactive session yielded positive review from staff of the Museum and the Administrator, Ms. Tamika Bostwain, who assured that the participants will make the best use of the knowledge imparted.

The training session also comes at the cusp of the arrival of two cruise Ships to Guyana in the coming days; many of the tour groups will visit the national Museum as part of their City Tour itinerary.

This year, the Guyana Tourism Authority has trained a total of 270 persons across the country, in the areas of Customer Service, Customer Service for Frontline Staff , First Aid/CPR, Dutch Language, House Keeping, and Waiter and Waitress Training.

Training continues in the South and North Rupununi in the areas of Portuguese Language for the Staff at the Takatu Crossing in Lethem and First Aid and CPR for Lodges and Resorts, Hotels, and Tour Guides.
