Georgetown : The Fire Advisory Board, which was re-established in October 2006 by Minister of Home Affairs,Clement Rohee to deal with capacity building, legislation and social and economic aspects with regards to firefighting is rapidly moving to initiate stronger fire prevention activities.
The Board in a recent report stated that it will be engaging the leadership of the insurance industry to pursue the issue of its contribution of at least one percent of premium income to the Guyana Fire Service (GFS) as well as the possibility of other means of collaboration.
According to the Minister, efforts will be made to ensure that the Mayor and City Council of Georgetown make good on its promise to commence demolition of derelict buildings. The Fire Service has identified 29 buildings that are deemed as very hazardous in the city and legal notices were sent to the owners.
Minister Rhee at a recent meeting with the Board expressed satisfaction with respect to the Board’s commitment in fulfilling its mandate.
