Molecule discovered initiates low calorie diet that keeps the brain younger

A report in the Medical Xpress said Italian researchers have discovered a molecule, called CREB1, that is activated by caloric restriction (low calorie diet) in the brain of mice and which initiates many genes related to longevity and proper brain function.

The head researcher said that their team hope to “find a way to activate CREB1, through new drugs, to keep the brain young without the need of a strict diet”

Some benefits of caloric restriction in the mice include greater cognitive performance and memory and have proven not to become obese nor develop diabetes, therefore keeping the brain young.

The Medical Xpress report quoted the head researcher saying “This discovery has important implications to develop future therapies to keep our brain young and prevent brain degeneration and the aging process.”
