Miner sells GGMC land for $13M, accused of fraud

Criminal-JusticeGeorgetown: Telford Layne of  Lamaha Place, South Ruimveldt Georgetown was today charged with obtaining money by false pretense.

The man who is a miner was remanded to prison by Chief Magistrate, Priya Sewnarine Beharry after the court heard that between December 4, 2012 and February 18, 2013 he obtained in excess of $13 million from Wayne Hubbard by falsely pretending that he was the owner of 12 plots of lands at an interior  locations of Guyana knowing same to be false.

 The defendant was not required to plead to charge. His Attorney, Lydon Amsterdam applied for bail.  Amsterdam told the court that his client is married with two minor children and that his wife is expecting the third child soon.  The lawyer further said his client was allocated the land by the Guyana Geology and Mines Commission, (GGMC).

However, Prosecutor Stephen Telford noted that the defendant is not authorized to sell the lands; the lawful sale of lands is only via GGMC.
